The Art of Intuitive Walking: a practice for cultivating magic.

Years before I was aware of my natural intuitive gifts, I began to tap into them through intuitive walking. This practice developed in my early twenties, when I went solo travelling for the first time. Armed with a map hidden in my pocket just in case, I explored the streets of Berlin, Prague and Budapest with only my senses. Taking each turn as it came, seeing which street or alleyway seemed more inviting to me. Often, I found hidden gems — sweet cafes, secret gardens and tiny museums I wouldn’t have explored otherwise. In addition to these physical places, as time went on my walks began to tell a story. I could ask a question, and receive signs and synchronicity from the world around me in response.

Looking back, this practice formed some really solid intuitive training for me. It developed my subtle senses in a way that has served me so well as my path has unfolded into a life largely lived by trusting my intuition.

I imagine you may have experienced this too — through “getting lost” in new cities to just seeing where the wind blows you. I wanted to share a few guidelines for this practice if you want to try this for yourself, or get some ideas to adapt your existing walking practice (I’ve led a few people through this in person too, and it was SO FUN!!)

1. Set an intention, or ask a question. This could be very simple and broad to very specific. You can also ask questions during your walk if you feel inspired.

“I want to receive messages from nature”

“I want to feel relaxed / inspired / grounded”

“I want to reconnect with my purpose”

“What actions should I take in my business this month”

“What energies or guides are supporting my journey right now?”

“Who am I?”

2. Check your surroundings. This is a great way to explore an area of your town/city you don’t know so well, or to get to know your neighbourhood deeper (although your habits and routines may try to get in the way of your intuition!). Either way — take responsibility for your personal safety and give yourself plenty of time to return home should you take a longer route.

3. Choose an anchor in your body. You’ll return here during your walk — try to keep your awareness inside your body as much as you can. Your anchor could be your breath, the feeling of your feet touching the ground, or any other physical sensation.

4. Begin walking! The technique: as much as possible, keep your awareness in your body (out of the thinking mind), and open your senses. Notice sights, smells, sounds, textures. Open your awareness to the outside world and the signals it has for you. At every cross-roads and choice point — stop and listen: which way is calling you? Trust the sense of aliveness that each way gives you.

5. Enjoy. Lean into the natural joy of being in your body, connecting with the outside world and opening to receive the everyday magic waiting just around the corner.

This is a practice that can be supportive in so many ways. You can learn about how your intuition speaks to you (it’s unique for everyone!), it can help you access “receiving mode” or just serve as a way to explore a different way of connecting to yourself than a sitting meditation or journaling.
